According to The American Heritage Dictionary, a niche is “a situation or activity especially suited to a person’s interests, abilities, or nature.” We all strive to find our “niche” in life – a place where hard work and creativity intersect and we find success… not only financial success, but satisfaction and joy. Valeri Ann has found her niche in tiny Merrifield, Minnesota: Valeri Ann’s Restaurant. It’s a cozy eatery with breakfast classics (including delectable cinnamon rolls), plus frozen meals and to-go baked goods. They also cater those hard to plan events, like graduation parties, weddings, and reunions.
Worldpopulationreview.com lists Merrifield as having a population of only 129 individuals, yet Valeri Ann’s draws in the crowds. When I think of Valeri Ann’s, a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson comes to mind: “If a man (or woman) can write a better book or preach a better sermon or make a better mousetrap than his neighbor, even if he builds his house in the woods, the world will make a beaten path to his door” (GoodReads.com). Word has gotten around and people are definitely beating a path to Valeri Ann’s. Just drive by any morning and you’ll see the breakfast crowd.
My personal experience with Valeri Ann’s is connected to a famous event in our family now referred to as “Potato-Gate.” A couple of years ago, we hosted our daughter’s wedding by ourselves (a small venue of about 40 guests). However, problem solving the creation of the side dishes like potatoes and vegetables became overwhelming. I asked Valeri if she would assist, and for a very reasonable price, she cooked the side dishes for us and even loaned out her professional sized warmers. The food was amazing, and “Potato-Gate” ended in the best way possible.
If you haven’t experienced Valeri Ann’s for yourself, put it on your to-do list, and soon. In fact, you might want to do the combo of having a delicious breakfast, followed by purchasing a homemade ready to heat and eat meal to make for dinner later. As you sit as a guest at Valeri Ann’s sipping your coffee and treating yourself, you will see that Valeri has truly found her niche.
